Cuyahoga Heights High School student Dominic Smallwood is building valuable job skills and exploring his future through the Transition-to-Work program at Cuyahoga Valley Career Center (CVCC). His growth and enthusiasm for learning have earned him recognition as this month’s CVCC Student Spotlight.

For Smallwood, attending CVCC offered a chance to prepare for life after high school and meet students from other districts. Enrolled in the Transition-to-Work program taught by Lynn Vincent, he is gaining practical experience, developing friendships, and discovering opportunities available after graduation.

One of Smallwood’s favorite parts of the program is applying classroom lessons. Through job site experiences at the Inn at Apple Ridge and Winking Lizard, he has explored different workplace environments while building his skills.

He also enjoys completing projects for Fastenal, organizing and packing parts for return. These assignments give him chances to practice workplace responsibilities through hands-on learning.

Another highlight is helping prepare for “Coffee Cart Friday,” when students deliver coffee and tea to staff throughout the building. The activity combines practical job experience with chances to connect with others in the CVCC community.

Vincent has seen Smallwood make meaningful progress as he prepares for his next steps.

“Dominic has demonstrated a lot of growth during his time in the program. He had a successful work experience at a golf course over the summer and continues building his vocational skills as he plans his next step after graduation. He is a pleasure to have in class,” Vincent said.

Looking ahead, Smallwood hopes to work in Walmart’s stocking department while continuing to build friendships and connections. His experiences at CVCC are helping him explore that goal and develop skills he can carry into the workplace. He enjoys being outdoors, whether he is riding his bike, running, or taking a walk. He also loves roller coasters, watching Toy Story 3, working on puzzles, and spending time with friends and family.

Through his experiences at Cuyahoga Heights High School and CVCC, Smallwood is preparing for the future one opportunity at a time. From workplace assignments to coffee deliveries, he is learning by doing and discovering where his interests can take him.
