Cuyahoga Heights High School seniors received a financial literacy lesson on October 14 when Michael Spangler, Director and Wealth Advisor with Sequoia Financial Group in Akron, visited the school to share practical advice on managing money and making informed financial decisions.
The presentation was coordinated by Julie Regula, career specialist with Cuyahoga Valley Career Center (CVCC), as part of ongoing efforts to help students prepare for life after high school.
During the session, students learned about the benefits of saving and investing early, including real-world examples of how small financial decisions can have a significant impact over time. The discussion also covered budgeting, saving vs. investing, credit scores and why they matter, compound interest, and how interest can work both for and against consumers.
With graduation approaching, students also received guidance on student loans, responsible borrowing, and other financial considerations they may encounter as they pursue college, career training, or employment.
Spangler encouraged seniors to take steps now toward building long-term financial security. “Every student in this room has the potential to retire a millionaire if they start early,” he noted.
Regula emphasized the value of connecting students with professionals who can share knowledge and experiences that extend beyond the classroom.
“It was great to see the students so engaged in learning about their financial futures,” remarked Regula. “Presentations like this further equip our students with knowledge and practical tools that will help them build a foundation for future financial independence as they move into adulthood.”
The presentation gave seniors an opportunity to ask questions, consider their financial goals, and gain a better understanding of the responsibilities that come with managing their own finances.
As students prepare for their next chapter, lessons like these provide a foundation for making thoughtful financial decisions, both immediately after graduation and in the years ahead.
