Girl making a rocket.

A year-long letter exchange between Cuyahoga Heights Elementary School (CHES) third graders and their counterparts from Hayes Elementary School in Lakewood culminated in a day of fun and learning when about 55 Lakewood students traveled to CHES to participate in Engineering Day.

Students rotated through several hands-on engineering activities with their new friends. Under the guidance of high school teachers and students who assisted the third graders, the students built rockets, rocket cars, racecars, gliders, and sailboats… all made with 3D-printed parts. After launching the rockets, powering the rocket cars with carbon dioxide cartridges, racing the racecars, and competing with the gliders and sailboats, students took home everything they constructed.

“Engineering Day was literally a blast!" said CHES science teacher Barb Currey, Ph.D., who coordinated the event. The day concluded with a picnic lunch and recess.
