EVERFI Financial Literacy Bee

Americans, of all ages struggle with financial literacy. With nearly a quarter of the population deemed “financially fragile’, this is a major social, economic, and community issue.

With this in mind, First Federal Lakewood is proud to announce that we are sponsoring the EVERFI Financial Literacy Bee, nationwide financial capability challenge for high school students. This year’s virtual challenge will take place over the next two weeks, and we want YOU to participate! The Financial Literacy Bee provides an opportunity for students to have some fun and learn critical financial concepts during Financial Literacy Month!

The short, interactive lessons teach students how to save, set financial goals, budget, and invest. After completing the lessons, students submit a short capstone essay in which they share a short-term, medium-term, or long-term savings goal and outline how they plan to achieve the goal. Three winners of the Financial Literacy Bee will receive up to $10,000 in college scholarships.

We will also be offering a prize for local participants. Two winners will be selected from local essay entries to receive $500* to put towards their education.

How It Works

Students can participate in just 3 easy steps:

  1. Visit the EVERFI Financial Literacy Bee website
  2. Complete the lessons (~10 minutes each)
  3. Submit a short essay sharing a savings goal of yours and how you plan to achieve it! Submission deadline is April 15th.

College Fairs

LOCAL COLLEGE NIGHTS

Many local high schools will host college and/or career nights this year. You and your parents are welcome to attend these programs. This is an excellent way of gathering information and also making key contacts. Often a financial aid presentation is included at these programs. If you have specific questions, please do not hesitate to call the sponsoring school directly.  Click here

College Application Procedure

TRANSCRIPTS, SCHOOL REPORT, LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION, TEACHER EVALUATIONS, ETC.

Apply early! We recommend that you have your college applications completed by Thanksgiving!

If you are applying through the Common Application, be sure to sign the FERPA waiver in Naviance. This is found by going to the COLLEGES tab and clicking on "Colleges I'm Applying To". All you need to enter is the email address you used to set up your Common App account, and your date of birth.

Most colleges and universities prefer online applications. Students must send their test scores directly from ACT/SAT. The Guidance Office needs your Record Release Form signed by a parent/guardian, and College Application Processing Form (one filled out for each college/university you wish to have transcripts, letters, etc. sent to) in order for us to send transcripts, etc. PLEASE ALLOW 1 WEEK FOR PROCESSING!

If you need letters of recommendation from your teacher(s) you must send them a request through your Naviance account AND ask them personally. Allow your teachers 2 weeks to upload the letter and teacher evaluation form to your Naviance account. If you need help with Naviance, see Mrs. Mudra or Mrs. Douglas.

COMMON APPLICATION

Many colleges are a member of the Common App. This is one application that may be used for applying to multiple colleges. For a list of participants, please go to www.commonapp.org.

College Representative Visits

Representatives from many colleges and universities meet with students in the PDR between September and December. They may also visit in the Spring. Students can sign up on Naviance if they would like to attend the meetings. Please check Naviance for an up-to-date visitation schedule.
